CASE STUDY | Cavatina

PALIO PLACEMAKING

SCOPE OF WORK
Design concept of common areas in Palio project.

Palio Office Park is a unique project located in the vicinity of the Gdańsk Shipyard. Its unprecedented scale will make a massive impact on the neighbourhood.

Cavatina commissioned us to conceptualise, design & visualise the common areas of Palio.

"TRADITION IS NOT THE WORSHIP OF ASHES, BUT THE PRESERVATION OF FIRE"

To bring the project to life, Urban Jungle Agency employed a design thinking approach, which is a human centered problem-solving method. This approach involved empathy and understanding for the needs of the future tenants, local community, and the historical context of the shipyard neighborhood.

REQUIREMENTS:

• Integrate two worlds: modern offices & industrial shipyards.

• Create the space open for the local community.

• Maximum functional flexibility (areas must be easily adaptable for changing requirements of future tenants).

CHALLENGES:

• All developments in the area must be consulted & approved by the “Monument Conservation Office”.

• Narrow and 900 m long shape of the plot makes function design extremely difficult.

• Coming up with contemporary design & paying tribute to the industrial past of the shipyard.

“PLACE IS A LOCATION CREATED BY HUMAN EXPERIENCES”

The Gdańsk Shipyard is a historic area that forms a large part of Gdańsk identity. With this in mind, we aimed to create a design that integrates modern offices with the industrial shipyard while also making the space accessible and open to the local community.

"it's very important that historic cities are allowed to reinvent their future"

All design was based on sea containers & industrial, metal made pergolas to visually integrate the project with the historic shipyard.

The plot was divided into two types of spaces. Along the narrow and long street we used the system of metallic pergolas to create the multi-function zones. Pergolas can be adapted for gastronomy, sport, meeting or other social activities. In the middle of the plot we arranged a gastro & entertainment zone made entirely for sea containers. Cafes, restaurants, bars will operate in this area. Additionally it will serve as Palios event space.

By using the sea containers & modules of pergolas we achieved amazing flexibility. Common areas will be easily adjustable to different functions. This will allow the developer to adapt to changing requirements of tenants over the years.

Open & effortlessly manageable spaces with good user experience make a good base for all other placemaking activities & help to revitalise the area.

WE DESIGNED COMMON AREAS OF PALIO AROUND 5 ESSENTIAL URBAN VALUES

CIVIC SPACE

Common spaces were based on a network of pergolas that enable flexible arrangement of functions encouraging meetings, exchange of thoughts, creative work or other forms of interaction.

HUMAN SCALE

Accessibility and a good UX were the most important for us. Despite the industrial design, the space is user friendly.

DIVERSITY

Gastronomy, sport, free time, relaxation, collaboration, art, fun. Palio common spaces will allow for many diverse functions.

CONSERVATION

The historical character of the place was preserved thanks to the use of industrial materials such as steel, sheet metal or concrete.

REGIONALISM

The unique character of Młode Miasto district was embedded in Palio’s DNA.
